4 Easy Steps for a Total Skin Detox

It seems that celebrity detox diets are all the rage these days.  From the apple cider vinegar diet to the grapefruit diet, it’s easy to get lured in by the promise of effortless and quick weight loss, or that you can simply flush your system of impurities with a single pill.

At Fytt, we believe in sustainable lifestyle modifications, and actionable steps you can take each day to achieve healthy.  Fortunately, just a few simple changes to your wellness regimen can yield visible long-term results.

Try incorporating these on a regular basis to give your skin a detoxifying beauty boost:

1. Wake up to a glass of lemon water to cleanse your body

Imagine how dehydrated you’d be if you went without any water or liquids for the next 8 hours.   That’s what happens to your body after a full night’s sleep.    The best way to jumpstart your morning isn’t coffee, but a glass of water with fresh lemon juice.   Other than rehydrating your skin, the incredible alkalizing properties of lemon juice acts as a natural detox by cleansing your body, and promoting glowing skin.

According to Reader’s Digest, lemon water improves digestive function by stimulating stomach acid and bile production.  Lemon water also acts as a natural liver cleanser, helping it remove toxins and waste from your body.  Another added skin healthy benefit of lemon water?  The collagen boosting Vitamin C.

2. Supplement your diet with probiotics for clearer skin

As you know, healthy skin starts from the inside.  Researchers have found that a balanced gut is key to overall skin health.  Skin conditions like acne, eczema, and rosacea are actually manifestations of inflammation within the body caused by underlying gut issues.   But with the addition of probiotics, many of these skin conditions can be alleviated.

Incorporating skin-loving probiotics into your diet on a daily basis is a no-brainer. Experts recommend taking a probiotic supplement each day that contains at least 30 billion CFU (colony forming units).  You can also easily get your daily dose of probiotics with yogurt or kefir containing the gut-friendly bacteria Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium.   Fermented foods such as miso, kimchi, and sauerkraut are also good sources of probiotics.

3. Stimulate circulation and eliminate toxins with a shower massage

We all know that exfoliation gets rid of dead skin cells, but did you know that regular exfoliation improves circulation and works to flush out toxins?  The age-old technique of dry brushing, which involves scrubbing your dry skin prior to showering with a scratchy brush works similar to a massage by encouraging the flow of lymph fluid into the lymph nodes to eliminate waste in the body.   Additional benefits include minimizing the appearance of cellulite for firmer skin.

According to Shape, look for a dry brush with firm bristles that are derived from vegetables.  Pros suggest using long, upward strokes starting from your feet and working your way up.

4. Incorporate more asanas for glowing skin

The secret to that yoga glow is backed by science.  Not only is yoga amazing for stress-relief, yoga improves blood circulation and increases oxygen flow into your cells leading to glowing skin.

However, certain asanas, or yoga postures, are more effective than others in terms of detoxifying and increasing circulation.  Inverted yoga postures and forward bends that focus on increasing blood flow to the head and face like the fish pose or child pose are especially beneficial.

Set aside a few minutes a day to practice these yoga moves and get ready to see the results.

The Fytt Perspective

Make it a habit of drinking lemon water (or even plain water) every morning before your cup o’ joe.  We promise, after the first week—you will crave it upon waking, and you will feel so much more awake.

Yogurt remains one of the best sources of probiotics.   However, remember to steer clear of yogurt brands loaded with sugar.  Better yet, mix plain Greek yogurt with a drizzle of honey and chopped walnuts.  We also recommend Siggi’s Icelandic-style yogurt for a low-sugar option.

You can also mimic the effects of dry brushing by massaging our exfoliating scrub treatment Hit Restart.  Massage the product in firm circular motions starting from your feet working your way up.  Start with our 3-Minute Healthy Skin Workout as a guide.

Studies show that 12 minutes of yoga a day can work wonders.  Try this 10-minute energizing morning sequence to jumpstart your day.
